Ali Pasha was a controversial Albanian Muslim warlord tolerant of orthodox Christians who ruled the western Greek and Albanian parts of the Ottoman Empire. Finally the Turkish Sultan was persuaded to depose him and sent an army In March 1821. Ali had left the citadel at Ioannina for a monastery on an island in a nearby lake. According to written sources, Ali Pasha was killed in January 1822 in a gun battle in the monastery but Gilbert was told that he was killed while sleeping in the bedroom upstairs and was shown the bullet holes fired through the wooden floor from below.
